Chances are slim this species will ever make our Big Year, Life or any other list. To actually see the bird in the wild, or in a wild-like environment, requires one to volunteer to monitor the species breeding activities. The fact that it breeds on a small island in New Zealand is only one of the challenges it faces. This endearing creature has a pretty good shot at survival because of the efforts of the volunteers who monitor and feed them. Wouldn't mind taking on some of that responsibility for a couple of weeks myself.

The fact that it breeds on a small island in New Zealand is only one of the challenges it faces. This endearing creature has a pretty good shot at survival because of the efforts of the volunteers who monitor and feed them. Wouldn't mind taking on some of that responsibility for a couple of weeks myself.
