Antelope Island

Yellow-headed Blackbird

Chukar

Eared Grebe

Western Meadowlark

Willet
We saw our first Yellow-headed Blackbird of the season on Antelope Island. A small flock was perched on some rocks just beyond the Marina and east-side road junction. It was an unusual location for this species, but strong winds were present and they might have been migrating to their breeding grounds. Thousands of Eared and a few Horned Grebes were feeding in the lake, especially near the two bridges of the causeway. Fielding Garr was hosting some sort of activity involving horses and that, combined with the wind, made birding birding unproductive there. We did manage a glimpse of the nesting Great Horned Owls in the patch of cottonwoods near the ranch buildings. The state park service has roped-off the area to separate gawkers from the animals. Somebody must have complained because in years past you could walk right up to the nesting site. Other birds of note were Northern Mockingbird and Sage Thrasher. We saw both individuals only briefly. We finished the day at Farmington where we saw numerous duck species but nothing out of the ordinary.
